Description
MacFamilyTree is a Genealogy Software by Synium Software GmbH for the Mac OS X operating system. Users can create and edit reports about a practically unlimited number of family members, making use of multiple sources, types of events and multimedia files. The family trees can be saved as HTML for shared access on a local hard drive or on Web pages over the Internet.
Features
MacFamilyTree has a configurable graphical user interface (GUI), integrated charting capabilities to illustrate family relationships. It also includes a web publishing tool to export the database, as well as charts and diagrams, to the Web.
MacFamilyTree supports GEDCOM import and export for reliable exchange of family data on various platforms including older Macs and Microsoft Windows.
Other features are the built-in support for Google Earth to research geolocations and the ability to relate imported digital imagery and web pages as well as audio and video files to the database contents.
Functions
Edit
MacFamilyTree offers various customizable edit modes where events, notes, media and other information can be added.
The Family Assistant is a dynamic and interactive navigation window which visualizes the genealogical relationships between all the members of the selected family.
The Person editor offers a variety of input options and tools for working with selected persons from the database: events, notes or multimedia data items can be attached to each family member. The navigator of the Family Assistant is also available in the Person editor.
The Family editor provides a listing of all the families entered in the MacFamilyTree database from the parent perspective. As in the case of the Person editor, the interface is user-configurable: individual panes of the editor can be combined with other panes as tabs, allowing multiple panes to appear in the same window.
The Sources list provides an overview of the relevance or reliability of the sources by way of a rating. In the edit mode source information can be added, administered and removed.
The Search window enables filtering on events and free-text searching of all entries. Double-clicking on an event takes you to the relevant edit mode.
Views
MacFamilyTree's »Views« visualize the information stored in the database from various perspectives.
The Virtual Tree visualizes the entire genealogy database. From all perspectives, close-up and from a broader angle, MacFamilyTree renders a three-dimensional mesh of persons and their relations.
The Ancestor Chart shows the origins of selected individuals and families, providing a view of the past or the person's pedigree.
The Descendant Chart displays selected families and their descendants, starting with the founding family of a given lineage.
The Family Chart visualizes kinship ties in a more complex way, showing all individuals related to a selected person.
In Genogram view, pictograms are used to show family ties. This view serves +to locate and analyze certain patterns and constellations relevant in medical studies, e.g. hereditary diseases, birth defects. The Genogram also serves to detect and trace recurrent behavior patterns within a family of relevance for psychotherapy or family therapy.
The Timeline shows all individuals in the data base with key events in a chronological view.
Statistics provide diagrams based on all information in the database. e.g. age statistics or birth or death frequencies for a particular month.
The Virtual Globe is a tool to interactively trace and visualize one's ancestors and living descendants through space and time. All events in MacFamilyTree's database (place of birth, place of death, place of emigration/immigration, etc.) can be further defined by coordinates, locating the events somewhere on Earth. These »Geolocations« can also be quickly attributed to events, using an automatic search feature and a dedicated server which supplies the geographic information. Finally, coordinates can be researched using Google Earth that will be directly invoked from within MacFamilyTree.
Reports
MacFamilyTree offers a number of different reports for information exchange and publication. The reports can be edited and then printed or exported as a PDF file.
The List of Persons outputs all the individuals in MacFamilyTree's database, along with their associated key events and places. The Persons Report compiles all the relevant information on the selected person in the form of a detailed formal report. The Places report shows all the events found for the places in the database. In the Events report all known events are displayed, sorted according to a definable period of time.
